Sipranthes sinensis

Botanical rarities

The orchids in this category are extremely rare botanical varieties. Some of them are delicate plants that are less tolerant than the orchids in the 'Easy Garden' category. They are more suitable for a connoisseur audience...

Of Japanese and Chinese origin, Spiranthes sinensis has the typical morphology of Spiranthes, namely a spiral inflorescence like a braid. It is characterized by pretty pink to dark pink petals surrounding the white heart.

It is a small plant, the tubers are small and the rosette of the leaves rarely exceeds 5-10 cm in diameter. This species becomes remarkable, however, when the very tightly packed pink to dark pink flower spikes appear at the end of the summer. These spikes can reach a height of 30 to 40 cm.

Plantation

Cultivation must be carried out in neutral or slightly acidic soil, rich in humus, moist but balanced by good drainage.

Some growers in his native Japan recommend sphagnum moss and sand composts. This orchid is totally robust and regularly produces new shoots when it is in good conditions.

Exhibition

In the garden, the ideal place will be sunny or semi-shaded. It is important not to let the substrate dry out in the summer.

As the seasons go by...

During the winter, the plant persists in the form of a rhizome and a rosette of leaves.
