The wonderful Dactylorhiza purpurella available again at Phytesia...+ tips

The Dactylorhiza purpurella (Purple Orchis), is a European orchid native to Great BritainIreland and Denmark

This wild orchid has very bright magenta flowers. The effect in gardens is unrivalled. In full bloom, the plant can grow to a height of 60-80 cm and the impressive flower spike regularly measures more than 30 cm.
This variety is very resistant to frost and is suitable for many types of soil, including cool, damp, humus-rich and even clayey.

This orchid is only available during the dormant period (from September onwards), which is an ideal planting time. It is available in limited quantities, so do not delay ....

Dactylorhiza are widespread in the wild in many parts of Europe. There are many different species.

So how do you choose your Dactylorhiza orchid?

Dactylorhiza fuchsii, for example, is very similar to Dactylorhiza maculata but is easier to grow and can be found in wet, temporarily drier locations but also in various types of soil. Dactylorhiza fuchsii also grows faster and produces many flower stems.

Dactylorhiza majalis or alpestris generally have a brighter colour (purple pink to dark red). With an earlier flowering period, they are a perfect companion for Dactylorhiza fuchsii or maculata, so that you can enjoy a flowering bed for longer.
The alpestris variety is considered a subspecies of Dactyloriza majalis. It is, as its name suggests, a mountain variety native to the Alps and has a stockier appearance and brighter coloured flowers.

TIPS : What should I do when I receive my Dactylorhiza Orchid?

1) We strongly recommend planting garden orchids when they are at the end of their annual cycle (late summer, autumn) and before the first frosts of winter. In addition to the beneficial effect on recovery when planted in medium temperature conditions, sending orchids by parcel post is also less stressful for the plants when periods of extreme temperatures are avoided. The natural cycle of the plants is not disturbed.

2) Replant the Dactylorhiza in the garden as soon as the order is received to avoid drying out the rhizome in the growing pot.

3) We offer a special potting soil for Dactylorhiza. This substrate is made of lava stone which has the ability to keep the soil moist. You can mix this substrate in a 50-50 ratio with your garden soil.
